Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Geneva Women Go Cold Late in Loss at Houghton

Houghton, NY—The Geneva College women's basketball team made a non-conference trip to New York on Tuesday evening to take on Houghton College.  The game was close most of the way, but Geneva went cold late and dropped the game, 56-45.  Geneva's record falls to 2-5, while Houghton improves to 4-3.

Geneva started slowly as Houghton scored the first six points of the game.  Geneva was still down 11-4 when the Golden Tornadoes started to get their offense going, led by freshman Alexis Gates and junior Jodie Carlson.  By the end of the first quarter, Geneva had cut the Houghton lead to 14-11.

Geneva opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run, and when Gates hit a 3-pointer early in the quarter, Geneva led 19-16.  From there the teams went back and forth, and Geneva took a 24-21 lead to halftime.  Gates gave the offense a big lift off the bench, scoring nine points on 3 of 4 shooting from long range.  Carlson added eight points in the half.

The game continued to stay close in the third quarter.  Houghton regained the lead early in the quarter, but back to back 3-pointers by Gates and junior Callie Ford gave Geneva the lead back, 34-30, and the Golden Tornadoes carried that lead to the fourth quarter, 39-36.

Unfortunately for Geneva, the offense went cold in the final quarter.  Houghton retook the lead early in the period, and with Geneva trailing just 42-41, Houghton finished the game on a 14-4 run to pull away and win, 56-45.

"I thought we played hard," said Head Coach Lori Wynn.  "To be tied with eight minutes to go is a good place to be.  We just didn't execute down the stretch.  But we are getting better and I'm pleased with that."

Gates gave the team a big lift off the bench with 13 points, including four 3-pointers.  Carlson finished the game with 12 points.

Geneva returns home on Saturday, December 9, when it welcomes Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Saint Vincent for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
