Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Geneva Women Drop Game to Saint Vincent

Geneva Women Drop Game to Saint Vincent

Beaver Falls, PA—On Saturday afternoon the Geneva College women's basketball team welcomed the Saint Vincent Bearcats to Metheny Fieldhouse. The Bearcats proved to be too strong for the young Golden Tornadoes, and Geneva dropped the game 87-53. Geneva fell to 2-6 overall, 0-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Saint Vincent improved to 5-4 overall, 3-1 in the PAC.

Saint Vincent jumped out to an early 15-6 lead midway through the first quarter, and Geneva responded with its best stretch of the afternoon, scoring eight straight points to cut the lead down to 15-14 early in the second quarter as both senior Lydia Songer and junior Callie Ford hit 3-pointers in the run. The Golden Tornadoes could not sustain the momentum, though, and Saint Vincent responded by finishing the half on a 21-9 run to go into the halftime break with a 36-23 lead. Songer, Ford, and freshman Alexis Gates all had five points in the half.

The second half proved more of the same for Geneva. The Golden Tornadoes did their best to hang in it, and they cut the lead to twelve, 49-37, late in the third quarter, but Saint Vincent put the game away by going on a 22-2 run over the next six minutes to go up 71-39 midway through the fourth quarter. The final score was 87-53.

"Saint Vincent is a good team," Head Coach Lori Wynn said after the game. "We were right with them for a good portion of the game and then we let them get in a run that we didn't match. Despite the final score, I thought we played hard and are getting better."

Gates led the offense again for the second straight game with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Ford added nine points on the afternoon. Freshman Jeana Luciana gave the squad a nice lift off the bench in her first extended action of the season and contributed six points.

Geneva takes a week off for finals before the Golden Tornadoes return to action next Saturday, December 16, when they travel to Penn State Beaver for an 11:00 a.m. tip-off.
