Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Geneva Women Fall Just Short After Late Rally

Monaca, PA—With the finals week behind it, the Geneva College women's basketball team made the short drive to take on Penn State Beaver on Saturday morning.  Despite a late rally, Geneva fell just short and lost the game, 56-52.  Geneva fell to 2-7, while Penn State Beaver improved to 5-6.

The game started closely, as both teams traded baskets until Penn State Beaver closed the first quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 17-12 lead into the first break.

Geneva responded by scoring the first nine points of the second quarter, as junior Callie Ford scored seven of those points, to go back up 21-17.  However, Penn State Beaver finished the half on an 8-2 run to retake the lead, 25-23, going into the halftime break.  Ford led the team with seven points in the half, while junior Noelle Henry added six points.

Penn State Beaver continued that run at the start of the third quarter by scoring five quick points, extending the lead out to 30-23.  Geneva continued to battle, though, and the Golden Tornadoes were able to cut the lead down to 41-38 by the end of the quarter.

Unfortunately, Geneva started the fourth quarter out cold from the field, and Penn State Beaver took advantage by pushing the lead out to 50-40 with just six minutes to go.  From there Geneva responded with a 10-2 run to close the lead to 52-50.  After both teams traded baskets, Geneva had the ball twice in the last 30 seconds trailing by just two, but unfortunately both possessions ended in turnovers.  Penn State Beaver made two free throws with one second left to seal the victory, 56-52.

"I thought we played hard," Head Coach Lori Wynn said after the game.  "We had chances to win it at the end, and I was pleased with our fight down the stretch to rally back.  We just need to learn to finish."

Ford led the team with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Henry added 12 points in the loss.  Geneva shot just 33% from the floor, including 2-14 from 3-point range, and the Golden Tornadoes were hurt by 21 turnovers and 25 fouls.

Geneva has its final game before break when it travels to take on Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Monday, December 18, at 11 a.m.
