Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Geneva Women Overpowered by IUP

Indiana, PA—On Monday morning the Geneva College women's basketball team finished up its first semester by traveling to play Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), which came into the matchup with an undefeated 9-0 record and a #5 ranking in the NCAA Division II.  The Golden Tornadoes proved to be no match for the powerful Crimson Hawks, losing 125-53.  Geneva fell to 2-8, while IUP improved to 10-0.

Geneva struggled right out of the gate against the IUP full-court pressure, committing three turnovers on its first four possessions as IUP took advantage to jump out to a 9-0 advantage before a 3-pointer from freshman Alexis Gates got Geneva on the board.  IUP kept the pressure up, and at the end of the first quarter Geneva trailed 32-9.

Geneva continued to struggle offensively to start the second quarter as IUP scored the first 15 points before two free throws from senior Lydia Songer with 5:03 remaining finally put Geneva on the board in the quarter.  At halftime IUP led 60-21, as Geneva managed to shoot just 32%, as well as committing 16 turnovers against the tough IUP full court pressure.  Gates had six points in the half, while Songer added five.

Geneva started well in the third quarter as 3-pointers from Gates and junior Callie Ford, followed by a layup from Songer, cut into the lead.  But IUP was too strong, and it stretched the lead back out by the end of the third quarter, 98-45.

The fourth quarter brought much of the same.  IUP ended up breaking the record school record for most points scored against a Geneva team, finishing with a 125-53 victory.  The previous record was 106 points set by Seton Hill back in 1990.

"It was a great opportunity for us to play at a big school in a big arena," Head Coach Lori Wynn said after the game.  "Obviously they are a great team.  I thought we played hard and got better at some things, and that was the goal of this game."

Gates led the team with 14 points, including 3-5 shooting from 3-point range.  Ford added 11 points, while Songer finished with nine.

Geneva enjoys a week off before the team comes back together after Christmas in preparation for a home game against visiting Clarks Summit University.  That game tips off at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 30.
