Crestview, KY—On Saturday afternoon the Geneva College men's soccer team fell at the Thomas More College Saints in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championship game in a hard fought battle, 1-0. It marked the 3
rd straight season Geneva made it to the PAC championship game, and the loss finishes off another excellent season with a 14-4-2 record.
The game represented the end of an era between these two soccer programs who have continually challenged for PAC supremacy in recent years, as Thomas More will be leaving the conference at the end of the year. This was the 16
th contest between the two schools, and all but two of them were decided by one goal or in a tie, including several that went into overtime, so it was only fitting that this championship game would go down to the wire. The series results fell almost completely to the home team, as Thomas More won all 10 of their home matches against Geneva, while Geneva was 4-1-1 in Beaver Falls.
One consistent theme with several of those road losses for Geneva was falling behind early, as they did in the matchup against Thomas More earlier in the regular season when they gave up two goals in the first nine minutes in an eventual 2-1 loss. Geneva managed to avoid that in the game today, outshooting Thomas More 7-5 in the first half as the game went into the halftime break scoreless.
The game continued scoreless until the 79
th minute when Thomas More scored off of a counter attack as a Saints offensive striker made a nice spin move and carried the ball into the box where he slotted the ball into the far corner of the goal. The goal put Thomas More up 1-0 and proved to be the game winner.
Geneva aggressively pushed forward in the remaining ten minutes in an effort to get an equalizer, and its best chance occurred in the 88
th minute when a loose ball in the box bounced around before a
Michael Pohlod shot was blocked and went out of bounds, keeping the score at 1-0.
Geneva outshot Thomas More in the game 13-12, as well as 5-4 shots on goal. Unfortunately the Golden Tornadoes could never manage to get one into the back of the net.
The loss means the program officially has to say to goodbye to their seven seniors who have three straight conference championship game appearances, along with one PAC title on their resume. Head Coach
Gary Dunda will have several holes to fill as he looks ahead to the 2018 season and making another deep playoff run.
