Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Geneva Men Coast Past W&J

Beaver Falls, PA—After four straight tough road games, the Geneva College men's basketball team was happy to be back in Metheny Fieldhouse on Wednesday, and it showed.  Geneva put together its best effort of the season as it defeated Washington & Jefferson (W&J), 74-49.  Geneva improved to 3-4 overall, 1-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while W&J fell to 1-6, 0-3 in the PAC.

Geneva got off to a fast start as it jumped out to a 15-2 lead.  After a W&J timeout, the Presidents tried to hang around and cut the lead to 15-9, but Geneva responded by scoring the next 11 points to extend the lead out to 26-9, and W&J was never able get back into the game from there.  Geneva closed out the first half with a 32-17 lead.  Senior Jimmy Leichliter led the way in the half with 13 points, while sophomore Ethan Moose added 8 points and 9 rebounds.

W&J scored the first bucket of the second half, but that was as close as it could get.  Geneva extended the lead out to as much as 31 points, 64-33, before settling for a 74-49 win.  The big lead gave Head Coach Jeff Santarsiero plenty of opportunities to get his younger players some playing time, as well as resting his veterans.

"It was a great effort by everyone," Coach Santarsiero stated after the game.  "We established a defensive presence early which led to a lot of good offensive opportunities.  That's the best we've played defensively all year.  I'm really pleased with the win, but we don't have a lot of time to rest as we welcome Saint Vincent on Saturday.  So we'll get back to work tomorrow and get ready for them."

Leichliter led the team with 20 points.  Moose finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points while grabbing 10 rebounds.  Junior Danny Torok also hit double digits with 10 points.  Geneva shot 52% from the floor while out-rebounding W&J 52-24.  All 16 players on Geneva's bench played as Santarsiero rotated in all of the Golden Tornadoes in the second half.

Geneva has another home game on Saturday, December 9, as Saint Vincent comes to Geneva for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.  Saint Vincent comes in with a 5-2 overall record, 2-1 in the PAC.
