Geneva Flexes Its “Mussels” In Victory over Mount Union
Beaver Falls, PA – The Geneva College men's soccer team survived a scrappy Mount Union team on Wednesday night with a 1-0 victory over the Purple Raiders of Mount Union to improve its overall record to 4-0. Mount Union, coming off an overtime victory against PAC rival Westminster, dropped to 2-3 on the season. The lone goal came off the foot of senior Nate Musselman. Musselman found a loose ball in the box after a cross from Michael Pohlod and quickly found the back of the net for what proved to be the game winner.
Musselman's goal stood up thanks to a staunch Geneva defense led by goalkeeper Luke Nolan. Nolan recorded his second shut-out of the season with a pair of saves including one late in the second half. Mount Union also narrowly missed tying the game when a shot skimmed off the cross bar with just under two minutes left in regulation.
Geneva outshot the Purple Raiders 12-6 on the night but only managed to put three balls on net. "Quite simply we survived tonight," said head coach Gary Dunda. "Give a lot of credit to a very tough Mount Union team. Our guys battled hard all night, but I still know there is so much more in them that needs to come out every match. It's certainly nice to get a win but we need to be more consistent and play 90 full minutes."
Geneva will put its perfect 4-0 record on the line on Saturday evening when it hosts Fredonia State in a 4 pm kickoff. Donations will be taken at the soccer match on Saturday and at the football game later in the evening to help support Hurricane victims in Texas and Florida.
