Hunsinger to Hughes Combination Gets Geneva Back in the Win Column
Hunsinger to Hughes Combination Gets Geneva Back in the Win Column
Pittsburgh, PA – Five match losing streaks are not something the Geneva College women's volleyball team is used to having to endure. On Wednesday, the Golden Tornadoes put an end to that streak with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 18-25, 25-18) conference victory over Chatham University. The victory pushed Geneva's overall record to 3-8, but more importantly kept Geneva unbeaten in the PAC at 2-0. Conversely, Chatham fell to 4-3 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The duo of Erica Hughes and Daphne Hunsinger proved to be unstoppable as the tandem hooked up time and time again throughout the night. Hughes finished the night with a team best 21 kills while Hunsinger picked up an impressive 42 assists in the match. Sydney McNulty also recorded double digit kills with 12 throw downs in the victory.
Defensively, Geneva had three players reach double digits in digs with McKenna Shick leading the way with 19, while teammates Alexis Jordan (13) and Hughes (11) also chipped in.
"It's been a long week," said Geneva head coach Wendy Smith. "We are battling through some inexperience issues with our group but it's exciting to see the progress happening every day. We have some special players on this roster and I'm confident we can make something very special happen this year but we need to continue to get better. Being 2-0 in the conference feels good and certainly putting that losing streak behind us is important."
Geneva will enjoy a much needed rest this weekend before getting back to action a week from Friday when they will play four matches in two days at the Carnegie Mellon Tournament.
