Hughes’ Huge Impact Leads to Double Conference Win

Grove City, PA – Powerhouse Erica Hughes' 42 kills for the night lead Geneva to hard fought victories over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rivals Grove City College (3-1) and Thiel College (3-2). The pair of wins move the Golden Tornadoes record to 5-12 overall, 4-0 in the PAC. Grove City finished the night with an overall record of 4-11, 2-4 in PAC. Thiel ended with an 8-10 overall record, 2-5 in the PAC.

Beginning the night's competitions, Geneva was able to topple Grove City College in four close sets (27-25, 25-19, 21-25, 30-28). The offensive battle was led by Hughes' 23 kills out of 65 attempts, earning a hitting percentage of .231 for the first match of the night with support from freshman setter Daphne Hunsinger's 31 assists.

Hughes' work was not confined to the net as she led the teams with 18 digs, followed closely by freshman Grace Holdeman's 16 and Hunsinger with 14.

Game two of the tri-match evening proved to be even tougher competition as the Thiel Tomcats forced Geneva into five sets (25-20, 23-25, 28-30, 25-12, 15-9) to claim the victory. Again Hughes shone on the court leading the GT's with 19 kills, followed by Allyssa Kerr and Sydney McNulty with 11 kills each. Hunsinger supported the offensive efforts with 41 assists.

Defensively, Hughes again dominated with 23 digs, followed by Holdeman with 19 and Hunsinger with 14.

Geneva returns home to face the Saint Vincent Bearcats on Thursday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. as it enter the full swing of conference competition. Saturday, September 30 will conclude the full week for the GT's as they face off with the Bethany Bison and Thomas More Saints in Metheny Field house starting at 11:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
