Despite Milestone for Hughes, Geneva Falls Twice at Kenyon Tournament
Gambier, OH – Erica Hughes will go down as one of the best players in Geneva volleyball history. On Friday night, she cemented her place in the Geneva record books as the senior outside hitter reached the 1000 kill mark on her second throw down of the evening. Despite the historical milestone, Hughes and her Geneva College teammates fell twice on the first night of the Kenyon College Tournament. Geneva dropped a 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20) decision to host Kenyon in the first match before losing 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-22) to Muskingum in the night cap.
Hughes led the offense with 17 kills in the opening night loss while teammate
Daphne Hunsinger set the way with 28 assists against Kenyon. Defensively, Geneva got a team best 23 digs from
McKenna Shick.
In the night cap, Geneva could not generate much offensively in the first set but kept things competitive in sets two and three but came up on the short end.
"I'm hopeful that seeing top notch competition in the early season will pay off down the line in conference play," said head coach
Wendy Smith. "We showed flashes during both of these matches, much like we did last weekend, but it's about being consistent and putting sets together. When you play tough teams, you have to be solid throughout the night or it just won't work. We will continue to grow and improve each time out."
Geneva is back in action tomorrow at Kenyon when it closes out the tournament with matches against Dennison (1 pm) and Otterbein (3 pm). Geneva will return home next Tuesday to face Hiram at 7 pm.Â
