Geneva Upends NAIA Mt. Vernon Nazarene to Remain Unbeaten at 4-0
Mt. Vernon, OH – Geneva College head coach
Mandee Craft was excited about the 2017 version of the women's tennis team. A 4-0 start to the season may have been pushing her expectations just a bit but on Friday night, Craft watched the Golden Tornadoes upend Mt. Vernon Nazarene 6-3 to pick up their fourth win in a row to start the season.
Geneva opened the match by winning two of the three doubles matches with number one and number two doubles winning by the scores of 8-0 and 8-4 respectively. The tandem of
Rachael Letterman and
Sara Stoll remained unbeaten with a convincing 8-0 victory while teammates
Grace Moyer and Felicity Orndoff won 8-4.
In singles action, Geneva's top four players all came away with victories including a three-set win (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) from Letterman in the top spot. Stoll cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory in second singles. Moyer and
Victoria Hinds each won their matches in straight sets to clinch the 6-3 win.
"This was a true test for our team," said Craft. "For some of our younger players to come on the road against a scholarship program and perform the way they did was very exciting. I was extremely proud of Rachael for battling the way she did to come back from one set down and get a big victory for the team. We have played tougher competition with each match so far this season which should prepare us well for the PAC schedule to open."
Geneva's women will return home next Friday to open the PAC schedule against Bethany College at 4 pm.
