Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Surge Leads to Geneva Win

Pittsburgh, PA—It had been two seasons since the Geneva College women's basketball team had won a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game on the road, but that long drought is now over after the Golden Tornadoes traveled to Chatham University on Wednesday night and knocked off the Cougars, 74-68.  Geneva finished the game by scoring the last eight points, securing the victory.  Geneva improved to 4-10 overall, 1-6 in the PAC, while Chatham fell to 4-11, 1-6 in the PAC.

Geneva jumped out to an early 8-2 lead four minutes into the game before the offense went cold.  Geneva failed to score over the next five minutes, allowing Chatham to take an 11-8 lead before a jumper from freshman Lauren Tipton broke the run.  A free throw from junior Noelle Henry tied the game at 13-13 heading into the second quarter.

Geneva made its first three 3-pointers in the second quarter, the first by freshman Alexis Gates and then back-to-back shots from junior Callie Ford to give Geneva a 22-15 lead.  Geneva held that lead until the final 1:28 when Chatham finished the half on a 7-0 run to take a 32-30 lead into halftime.  Ford led the team with 10 points in the half, while Gates added 8.

Chatham carried that momentum into the third quarter, scoring the first six points of the second half to take its biggest lead of the game, 38-30.  From there Geneva slowly chipped away at the lead, and Geneva took a 47-46 lead on a jumper from freshman Emily Melnek to finish out the quarter with a narrow one point lead.

Geneva looked to be gaining control of the game after a jumper from Tipton put the Golden Tornadoes up 58-49, its biggest lead of the game, with 7:24 remaining.  But Chatham immediately responded by scoring the next 13 points of the game to go up 64-60.  Chatham still led 68-66 with just over a minute remaining when Gates hit a huge 3-pointer with 1:07 remaining to regain the lead, and Geneva never trailed again.  Geneva made its free throws over the final minute and won, 74-68.

"We hung tough when we were down six," Head Coach Lori Wynn said afterwards.  "And we fought really hard.  We got contributions from a lot of players, and this is sort of win that can give us a lot of confidence moving forward."

Ford led the team offensively again, finishing with 22 points on the evening.  Gates finished with 18, while junior Jodie Carlson had her best game of the season with 13 points.  Geneva shot 46% from the floor, and the Golden Tornadoes made nine 3-pointers.

Geneva comes back home on Saturday, January 13, for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff against Waynesburg University.  Waynesburg comes into that contest 9-5 overall, 5-2 in the PAC.
