Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Geneva Hangs Tough but Loses to Waynesburg

Beaver Falls, PA—On Saturday afternoon the Geneva College women's basketball team took on Waynesburg at Metheny Fieldhouse.  One year ago Geneva lost by 46 points to the visiting Yellow Jackets, but this time the Golden Tornadoes would hang much tougher.  Geneva led at halftime, but a 14-0 Yellow Jacket run midway through the third quarter was the difference in the game, and Geneva dropped the game, 80-71.  Geneva fell to 4-11 overall, 1-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Waynesburg improved to 10-5 overall, 6-2 in the PAC.

It was clear early on that this year's matchup would be a different story as Geneva scored the first six points of the game.  Led by junior Jodie Carlson, who scored eight points in the first quarter, Geneva kept the lead throughout the first 10 minutes, and Geneva finished the quarter with a 14-9 lead.

The second quarter proved much the same, as Geneva continued to play well.  Freshmen Alexis Gates and Lauren Tipton carried the load offensively in the quarter, both scoring eight points.  Waynesburg was able to tie the score two minutes before halftime, but Geneva managed to take a one-point lead, 35-34, into the break.

The third quarter proved the difference in the game.  Tied at 38-38, Waynesburg went on a 14-0 run to take a 52-38 lead, and Geneva could never recover, though the Golden Tornadoes cut the deficit to 63-52 at the end of the quarter.

Geneva continued to battle in the fourth quarter, getting contributions from junior Callie Ford, along with Carlson and Tipton.  Geneva was able to get as close as 77-69, but the Golden Tornadoes could not get closer than that, losing 80-71.

"I thought we played hard," Head Coach Lori Wynn said after the game.  "We just need to clean up a few things.  I'm so proud of our team's effort, though."

Geneva was led by Carlson who finished with a career high 21 points on 7-12 shooting.  Tipton gave the team a huge lift off the bench with the best effort of her young career, finishing with a double-double, 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Ford also recorded another double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Senior Addy Knetzer led Waynesburg with 28 points and 15 rebounds as Geneva struggled on the boards, getting out-rebounded 52-34 against the bigger Yellow Jackets.

Geneva has another home game next Wednesday night, at 5:30 p.m, when Westminster comes to town for Pack-The-Gym night at Metheny Fieldhouse.  Westminster comes in with a 4-11 record, 0-8 in the PAC.
