Geneva Struggles in Loss to Westminster

Beaver Falls, PA—The Geneva College women's basketball team welcomed rival Westminster College to Metheny Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening for Pack-the-Gym night.  Westminster came in winless in the conference, but the Titans proved to be too much for the Golden Tornadoes, who struggled offensively and couldn't get the stops they needed defensively as Westminster pulled away for a 70-53 victory.  Geneva fell to 4-12 overall, 1-8 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Westminster improved to 5-11, 1-8 in the PAC.

Geneva struggled early offensively, and it was a sign of things to come.  Geneva managed just eight points in the first nine minutes, and Westminster took advantage by jumping out to a 16-8 lead.  A layup by junior Callie Ford right before the end of the first quarter finally got Geneva into double figures, bringing Geneva to within 16-10.

Despite Geneva's struggles offensively, the Golden Tornadoes managed to hang around, and two free throws from senior Lydia Songer with one minute remaining before halftime tied the score at 24-24.  A layup from Westminster right before halftime gave the Titans a 26-24 lead going into the locker room.

Geneva's best stretch of the evening came immediately after halftime.  Geneva scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to take its biggest lead of the game, 35-26.  Unfortunately for the Golden Tornadoes, things went downhill for the remainder of the game.  Westminster closed the quarter on a 23-7 run to take a 49-42 lead into the final quarter.

In the final quarter, the Titans continued right where they left off, stretching the lead out to 68-51 with 4:20 to go, never letting the Golden Tornadoes back into the game.  Westminster closed out the victory, 70-53, for its first PAC win of the year.

"We had some good spurts," Head Coach Lori Wynn said after the game.  "We just need to be able to sustain those to win games."

Geneva was led again by senior Jodie Carlson, who finished with 17 points on 5-10 shooting, including 2-2 from 3-point range.  Songer added 13 points, while Ford finished with 10 points.  Geneva shot just 32% from the floor, including 5-18 (28%) from 3-point range.  Westminster was led by Jackie Mathews, who scored 22 points.  Mathews did most of her damage from behind the 3-point line, going 5-8 on the night.

Geneva heads to Washington and Jefferson on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. tip off.  The Golden Tornadoes return home next Wednesday night for a 5:30 tip off against Bethany.
