Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Geneva Defeats Waynesburg for Third Straight Win

Beaver Falls, PA—For the first time in over a year, the Geneva College men's basketball team is riding a three-game winning streak after defeating visiting Waynesburg University, 72-57.  All three victories came in one week, as the Golden Tornadoes had a rare three-game week, defeating Franciscan on Monday night and earning a road win at Chatham on Wednesday night.  Geneva improved to 7-8 overall, 3-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Waynesburg fell to 7-8 overall, 3-5 in the PAC.

With the score tied 4-4 early on, Geneva scored 15 straight points over the next five minutes to take a big early lead, 19-4.  Waynesburg responded with its best stretch of the game, cutting the Geneva lead down to 23-19 with five minutes to go in the half.  But Geneva closed on a 12-4 run to take a 35-23 into halftime.  Senior Jimmy Leichliter led the offense with 18 points in the half, including three 3-pointers.

Waynesburg hit a 3-pointer to open the second half to cut the lead to single digits, 35-26, which was the closest the Yellow Jackets would get the rest of the game.  Geneva scored the next six points to stretch the lead back to 15 points, 41-26, and Waynesburg would not get closer than 13 points the remainder of the evening.  The Golden Tornadoes would stretch the lead out to as big as 65-41 before finishing with a 72-57 victory.

"It was a great win for us," Head Coach Jeff Santarsiero said.  "We are starting to get it.  We really locked down defensively, which is a key to our success.  Jimmy was good again, but we really played as a team and got contributions from a lot of players.  I really feel like we're making some very good strides right now, and this is the best we've played so far this season."

Leichliter led the offense with 23 points, including 4-9 shooting from 3-point range.  Sophomore Ethan Moose added 13 points and 8 rebounds, while junior Eric McGee also reach double figures with 12 points.  Sophomore Noah Damazo gave the team a lift of the bench, adding nine points.  Geneva held the Yellow Jackets to just 31% shooting from the floor.  Waynesburg's leading scorer, Jon Knab, a Beaver Falls native, struggled in his return home, scoring 12 points but shooting just 4-17 from the field.

Geneva welcomes rival Westminster on Wednesday, January 17, for a 7:30 p.m. tip off on Pack-the-Gym night at Metheny Fieldhouse.  Westminster is currently in first place in the PAC with a 6-1 conference record, 12-2 overall.
