Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women No Match for Saint Vincent

Latrobe, PA—The Geneva College women's basketball team traveled to Latrobe, PA, to take on Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon, a place Geneva has always struggled.  Since joining the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) in 2009, Geneva has yet to win at Saint Vincent, and its closest game was 14 points.  Unfortunately this game only brought more of the same as Saint Vincent easily defeated Geneva, 89-36.  Geneva fell to 5-14 overall, 2-10 in the PAC, while Saint Vincent improved to 12-7 overall, 9-3 in the PAC.

Senior Jodie Carlson scored four early points, and Geneva trailed just 5-4 two minutes into the game.  However, it was all Saint Vincent from that point on as the Bearcats ended the first quarter on a 19-2 run to take a 24-6 lead.  Geneva shot just 17% in the first quarter, while committing seven turnovers.

Saint Vincent continued its strong play, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second quarter to take a 35-8 lead, and Head Coach Lori Wynn took a time out to try to regain some momentum.  The offense began to play better, as the Golden Tornadoes finally found some success against the Bearcat's defense, but Saint Vincent's hot shooting continued, and it took a 55-21 lead to halftime.  Saint Vincent shot an impressive 59% in the half, and an even more impressive 63% from 3-point range, shooting 10-of-16 from deep.  Carlson and junior Callie Ford led the offense with nine points a piece in the half.

The halftime break did little to slow the Bearcats down, as Saint Vincent scored the first 11 points of the third quarter before a jumper from Ford gave Geneva its first points of the second half.  Saint Vincent finished the third quarter with a 72-29 lead.  Both teams played mainly their reserves in the fourth quarter, and the Bearcats finished off the victory 89-36.

Geneva was led by Ford who finished with 15 points.  Freshman Lauren Tipton had another strong game, scoring 6 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.  Geneva shot just 26% from the floor, including just 1-of-16 from 3-point range, while Saint Vincent finished at 51%.  The Bearcats were led by junior Maria Morgan who led all scorers with 17 points on the afternoon.

Geneva returns home for its next game on Wednesday night, as it welcomes Thiel College to Metheny Fieldhouse for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.  Thiel is currently 3-16 overall, 2-10 in the PAC.
