Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ford Leads Geneva to Win Over Thiel

Beaver Falls, PA—The Geneva College women's basketball team welcomed a struggling Thiel team on Wednesday night to Metheny Fieldhouse, a team that had lost 13 straight games coming into the contest.  Led by junior Callie Ford's big night, Geneva jumped on the visiting Tomcats early and led for almost the entire game, eventually winning 71-55.  Geneva improved to 6-14 overall, 3-10 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Thiel fell to 3-17 overall, 2-11 in the PAC.

Thiel's only lead came on a 3-pointer from senior Taylor Duchon that gave the Tomcats an early 3-2 lead.  Geneva responded by scoring the next seven points, and the Golden Tornadoes never trailed again.  Geneva led 19-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Geneva pushed its lead to 13 points, 26-13, on a 3-pointer from Ford two minutes into the second quarter, but the Tomcats cut the lead back down to 28-23 on the strength of back-to-back 3-pointers from the PAC's leading scorer, junior Jess Vormelker.  However, a 3-pointer from junior Noelle Henry just seconds before the end of the first half gave Geneva a 35-26 lead going into the break.  Both Ford and senior Jodie Carlson scored eight points in the half, while Henry added seven.

Geneva took control of the game early in the third quarter, as the Golden Tornadoes opened the second half on a 9-2 run to take a commanding 44-28 lead.  That lead eventually grew to as high as 19, at 55-36, and Geneva never let the Tomcats back into the game.  The Golden Tornadoes eventually finished Thiel off for the 71-55 win.

"I thought our kids worked really hard defensively," Head Coach Lori Wynn said after the game.  "We executed the game plan, and we defended really well and held Vormelker in check.  I'm just so proud of our effort tonight on the defensive end!"

Ford led the way with 24 points, including 6-of-11 shooting from 3-point range, and she grabbed 11 rebounds for another double-double.  She is now just 17 points shy of 1,000 career points.  Carlson also had a big night as she finished with 18 points.  Henry once again gave the Golden Tornadoes a lift off the bench, finishing in double figures with 11 points.  Geneva held Thiel to just 38% shooting.  Duchon scored a game high 27 points, but Vormelker finished with just 13 points, seven points below her average.

Geneva heads back out on the road on Saturday to take on the first place Thomas More Saints for the last time before the Saints leave the conference at the end of the season.  Tipoff for that game is at 1:00 p.m.  The Golden Tornadoes then return home next Wednesday to take on Grove City at 5:30 p.m.
