Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Geneva Drops OT Thriller at Grove City

Grove City, PA—On Wednesday evening the Geneva College men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking game at Grove City College in overtime, 88-80.  Geneva looked to have the game won in regulation when senior Jimmy Leichliter hit a 3-pointer with one second remaining to give Geneva the lead, 70-69.  However, a Geneva foul on the inbounds play gave Grove City two free throw shots, and the Wolverines hit one of the two shots, sending the game to overtime, where they eventually pulled out the game.  Geneva fell to 4-7 overall, 1-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Grove City improved to 10-2 overall, 3-2 in the PAC.

The first half proved to be a back and forth affair.  With Geneva leading 8-7 in the early going, Grove City hit three straight 3-pointers to take a 16-8 lead.  The Golden Tornadoes responded by scoring the next eight points to tie the game at 16-16, and the game stayed close for the remainder of the half, with neither team leading by more than four points.  Senior Jimmy Leichliter hit an off balance 3-pointer at the buzzer to send Geneva to the locker room with a 34-31 lead.  Junior Eric McGee and sophomore Ethan Moose led Geneva in the first half with eight points apiece.

Grove City appeared to take control early in the second half, as Geneva struggled offensively, and as a result Geneva found itself down 56-47 with nine minutes remaining.  But Geneva began to chip away at the lead and were down just 69-67 when the Golden Tornadoes controlled a rebound and took a timeout with ten seconds remaining.  Leichliter appeared to have won the game when he hit the fall-away 3-pointer with one second remaining, but the inbounds foul allowed Grove City to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Grove City carried that momentum into the overtime period where it quickly jumped on Geneva, scoring the first six points of overtime, and Geneva never led again.  Grove City closed out the win from the free throw line and won, 88-80.

"This was a tough one," Head Coach Jeff Santarsiero said afterwards.  "We battled, but we made enough mistakes late to lose.  Give credit to Grove City.  They did what they needed to do to win."

Moose led the way with 24 points and 9 rebounds.  McGee had another strong game for the Golden Tornadoes since moving to the starting lineup, as he added 20 points.  Leichliter finished with 18.

Geneva returns to Metheny Fieldhouse on Saturday, January 6, for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off against Thomas More.  Thomas More comes in tied for first in the PAC with a 4-1 record, 8-4 overall.
