Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Geneva Falls to #8 Thomas More

Beaver Falls, PA—The Geneva College women's basketball team welcomed the #8 ranked Thomas More Saints on Saturday afternoon.  The Saints came into the game riding an 87 game winning streak in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games, and Geneva proved no match for the powerful Saints, losing 100-56.  Geneva fell to 3-10 overall, 0-6 in the PAC, while Thomas More improved to 12-1, 6-0 in the PAC.

Thomas More scored the first ten points of the game before a jumper from junior Callie Ford got the Golden Tornadoes on the board.  The bucket did little to slow the powerful Saints down, as Thomas More continued its run that pushed the lead to out to 34-4 near the end of the first quarter.

Geneva responded with its best quarter of the game in the second.  Led by freshman Alexis Gates, Geneva outscored the Saints 19-18 in the quarter, with Gates scoring 11 points.  The Saints took a 52-26 lead into the halftime break.

Geneva opened the third quarter on a 6-2 run on the strength of back to back 3-pointers by Gates and senior Lydia Songer.  From there it was all Thomas More for the rest of the quarter.  The Saints went on a 33-5 run over the next 10 minutes to go up 87-37, before the Saints closed out the win 100-56.

"Obviously Thomas More is really good," Head Coach Lori Wynn said after the game.  "I think we did some good things today, once we settled down.  We are young and continuing to improve, and there were moments in this game that we can build on."

Gates led the offense with 20 points, shooting 7-13 from the floor, including 6-10 from 3-point range.  Ford added 15 points, while Songer added 9 points.  Thomas More was led by reigning PAC player of the year Abby Owings, who scored 26 points.

Geneva travels to Chatham next Wednesday, January 10, for a 5:30 p.m. start time.  The Golden Tornadoes return home next Saturday, January 13, when they welcome Waynesburg at 1:30 p.m.
