GENEVA FALLS TO CASE WESTERN, MARSHALL CONTINUES TO CLIMB
Beaver Falls, PA – It took the Golden Tornadoes three quarters to get its offense on track on Saturday night and by that time it was too little, too late as Geneva dropped a 27-14 decision to the 22
nd ranked Case Western team. Geneva fell to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference while the Spartans improved to 6-1 overall, including a 5-1 mark in league play.
Case Western found the end zone in both the first and second quarters and took a 14-0 lead into the locker room. The Spartans scored on an 8-play drive to open the game and then capitalized on a Geneva turnover and scored just 16 seconds later to double their lead. Meanwhile, Geneva's offense could not get clicking after scoring 43 points a week ago at Washington & Jefferson.
After a third quarter touchdown by Case Western extended the lead to 21-0 early in the third quarter, Geneva finally put things together on offense and scored its first touchdown with just under 12 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Trewon Marshall capped a seven play, 34 yard drive with a one yard plunge to get Geneva on the board. The teams traded touchdowns late with Marshall again finding the end zone from six yards out to get Geneva its second score of the game.
Marshall finished the game with 159 yards on the ground on 32 carries. More impressively, Marshall became Geneva's third all-time leading rusher passing Willie Murray and leaving just Melvin Cobbs and Gerard Muschette in front of him.
Case Western posted 385 yards of offense, which is more than 100 yards less than it has averaged all year. In fact, the Spartans came into play averaging over 40 points per game. Geneva's offense accounted for 272 yards including 213 on the ground.
Defensively, Geneva got seven tackles each from
Jacob Robertson and
Bryan Weyant to lead the way on that side of the ball.
"That is a very good team over there," said head coach
Geno DeMarco. "We have a small margin of error and when we make mistakes, good teams like that take advantage. We left a lot of points out there tonight and they made plays when they had to. We are close, but we need to get over that hump and put 60 minutes together if we expect to win games consistently in this conference. We have work to do, but the effort is always there."
Geneva will take another PAC test next week when it travels to Carnegie Mellon for a matinee in Pittsburgh. The final two weeks of the season will see the Golden Tornadoes back at Reeves Field. Geneva will host Grove City at 7 pm on November 3
rd and will meet Westminster on the 10
th at 1 pm.
