Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Geneva Beats Thiel to Close out Regular Season, Clinches Home Play-off Match

Greenville, PA – The Geneva College women's volleyball team needed a win on Tuesday to clinch a home match in the first round of next week's Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament. One night after taking care of business on the road at Waynesburg, the Golden Tornadoes picked up another road victory by the score of 3-1. The victory ensures Geneva of a home play-off game next Tuesday night against either Grove City or a rematch against tonight's opponent.

Unlike Tuesday night, Geneva got off to a good start and took care of Thiel 25-15 in the first set. Midway through the first set tied at 11-11, the Golden Tornadoes ran off nine straight points, including eight in a row from the serve of Kayla Coughlin. Geneva did not do much with its momentum as it saw the Tomcats respond with a 25-17 victory in the second set.

The mark of a good team is one that responds to adversity and much like last night Geneva did exactly that by scoring seven of the first eight points in the third set and taking the momentum right back on its way to a 25-17 win in set number three. Geneva controlled the fourth set and put the match away with a 25-12 victory.

Geneva's victory pushed its overall record to 15-11 including a 9-7 final mark in the PAC. Meanwhile, Thiel dropped to 14-18, 6-9. Thiel will now enter Saturday looking for one final conference victory and the right to travel to Beaver Falls to face Geneva in Tuesday's first round play-off match.

It was the usual suspects once again shining for Geneva on Wednesday night.  Sydney McNulty again led the offense with 19 kills while Alyssa Kerr added 12. Daphne Hunsinger came with one kill of yet another triple-double. As it was, she finished with nine kills, 32 assists and 11 digs. McKenna Shick had a great night on the defensive end of the court with a team best 35 kills with McNulty adding 19 kills of her own.

"This was a solid team effort," said head coach Wendy Smith. "Winning back to back road conference matches is a great accomplishment and we are very much looking forward to a big home advantage on Tuesday night in the first-round."

The Golden Tornadoes still have some work to do in the regular season as they head to Houghton, NY over the weekend for three non-conference matches in the Houghton College Tournament. Geneva will open play on Friday night against host Houghton College.
