Pittsburgh, PA – In a game that took place 48 hours after it was originally scheduled because of the tragic events in Pittsburgh over the weekend, Geneva and Chatham hooked up in a winner-take-all season finale with the winner heading to the post-season and the loser heading to the off-season. A Chatham goal with just over two minutes remaining before halftime proved to be the difference in a 1-0 loss to the Cougars.
The loss eliminated Geneva from play-off contention despite an incredible turnaround season for head coach
Linda Sumner and the Golden Tornadoes. Just one year ago, Geneva's women finished the season with a 5-11-1 overall record and just two conference wins. After tonight, the Golden Tornadoes end the 2018 campaign with an overall record of 9-8, including a 5-3 conference record. Only the head to head tie-breaker against tonight's opponent kept them from qualifying for their first PAC Tournament appearance.
Chatham controlled the pace of play for the majority of the night, but it was the stellar play of junior goalkeeper
Danielle Lincoln that kept the Golden Tornadoes in the match. Lincoln came into tonight's match with three consecutive shut-outs but it was just the one Chatham goal that made the difference. Lincoln faced 14 shots on goal and came up with 13 saves. The Cougars out shot Geneva 23-4 for the night with the Golden Tornadoes only having a couple scoring opportunities in the game that didn't connect.
"This is a difficult way for us to end our season," said Sumner. "I am so proud of our effort tonight and the effort these ladies gave all season long. I'm especially proud of our seniors and the leadership that was shown throughout the year. We made great strides this year and rebounded from a tough season last year. I'm hopeful that we have now set a standard that we will be able to build upon next year and in the years to come."
Chatham advances to the post-season with the victory and will face top-seeded Grove City College on Wednesday with the other semi-final featuring Washington & Jefferson and Westminster.
