Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women Defeat Chatham on Senior Night

Beaver Falls, PA—The Geneva women's basketball team was in need of a win on Senior Night to put itself in position to qualify for the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs, and the Golden Tornadoes got exactly what they needed by defeating a struggling Chatham team, 66-60, though it wasn't easy.  Despite the fact Chatham came in losers of seven straight, the Cougars gave Geneva all it could handle as the Golden Tornadoes had to come from behind for the victory.  Geneva's record improved to 7-16 overall, 4-12 in the PAC, while Chatham fell to 4-19 overall, 2-14 in the PAC.

Geneva struggled early offensively, and that enabled Chatham to jump out to an 11-6 lead towards the end of the first quarter.  However, junior Callie Ford converted a conventional three-point play, and then a possession later she was fouled attempting a halfcourt shot at the buzzer, and after she made all three free throws, Geneva led 12-11 at the end of the quarter.

From there, though, Chatham began to take control.  Geneva only made one basket in the first seven minutes of the second quarter, and the Cougars took advantage by taking a 29-18 lead with two minutes remaining until halftime.  The final two minutes proved to be pivotal for the Golden Tornadoes, though, as they finished the half by scoring the final nine points, cutting the halftime deficit to 29-27.  Ford led the offense in the first half with 12 points, while senior Jodie Carlson added eight points.

That momentum did not carry over to the second half, unfortunately, as Chatham pushed the lead back out to 40-33 with four minutes remaining in the quarter.  Once again, though, Geneva responded with a strong close to the quarter, finishing on an 8-2 run to close the gap to just one point, 42-41, heading into the fourth quarter.

It wasn't until Ford hit a 3-pointer two minutes into the final quarter, which was Geneva's only 3-pointer on an evening in which it shot 1-16 from deep, that Geneva finally regained the lead, 49-48.  The lead changed hands twice before Geneva finally took the lead for good on a free throw from freshman Alexis Gates with 1:57 remaining that put the Golden Tornadoes up 53-52.  From there Geneva converted offensively down the stretch to hold on for a 66-60 lead to send its seniors, Carlson, Lydia Songer, Rachel Moore, and Amanda Knecht off with one final victory inside Metheny Fieldhouse.

"I'm so proud of our kids," Head Coach Lori Wynn said after the game.  "We really had to fight for it tonight.  We played with composure and discipline down the stretch.  We really defended hard, and it was great to see our seniors get a win in their final home game."

Ford did her part to ensure her four senior teammates got a win, scoring a game-high 22 points while grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds.  Carlson finished with 18 points, including 10-10 shooting from the free throw line, while Songer also reached double figures in her last home game with 11 points.  Chatham was led by junior Ashley McClain, who finished with 20 points.

With the win, Geneva put itself in great position to qualify for the PAC playoffs.  The Golden Tornadoes finish their regular season with two road games next week, traveling to Westminster on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff and the finishing on Saturday at Waynesburg at 1:30 p.m.
