Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Win over Westminster Clinches Playoff Spot

New Wilmington, PA—The Geneva College women's basketball team picked up a huge road win on Wednesday night over the Westminster Titans, 66-54, behind junior Callie Ford's 19 points and 16 rebounds.  The victory over the Titans was significant for multiple reasons, as the win clinched a spot in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs for the Golden Tornadoes, and it is the first time the Geneva women have won at Westminster since 1999.  Geneva improved to 8-16 overall, 5-12 in the PAC, while Westminster fell to 7-17 overall, 3-14 in the PAC.

Westminster jumped out to an 8-2 lead after Geneva struggled early with turnovers.  Geneva still trailed 11-5 midway through the quarter when freshman Alexis Gates hit a 3-pointer to kick off a 10-0 run for the Golden Tornadoes, before a bucket by Westminster right before the end of the quarter gave Geneva a 15-13 lead going into the second quarter.

Geneva held that lead for most of the second quarter, but the Golden Tornadoes could not stretch the lead beyond four points, and they took a 31-28 lead into the halftime break.  Senior Jodie Carlson scored eight points, while freshman Lauren Tipton added seven points.

Geneva opened the third quarter well, as senior Lydia Songer and Ford hit 3-pointers early to give Geneva a 39-30 lead.  However, Westminster went on a 16-3 run over the next seven minutes to take a lead, 46-42, early in the fourth quarter.  From there it was all Golden Tornadoes, though, as Geneva finished the game on a 24-8 run.  Ford, after being held to just three points in the first half, exploded for 16 second half points to pace the offense, clinching a spot in the PAC playoffs with the 66-54 victory.

"Once again we had to really grind out a win," a happy Head Coach Lori Wynn said after the game.  "We played with discipline down the stretch.  I'm so proud of our effort tonight!"

Ford's 19 points were a game-high total as she shot 7-of-11 from the floor, and she matched her career high in rebounds from last game with 16, while adding five assists.  Carlson had 13 points while Gates added 10 points.  Westminster was led by sophomore Kayla Bennett, who finished with 14 points on the evening.

Geneva travels to Waynesburg on Saturday for its last regular season game of the year.  Tipoff is at 1:30 p.m.  After that Geneva will take part in the first round of the PAC playoffs on Monday night, with Bethany College the most likely opponent.
