Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Waynesburg Too Strong for Geneva

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team finished up its regular season with a road game at Waynesburg, and the Yellow Jackets proved to be too strong for the Golden Tornadoes on Saturday, defeating Geneva 82-62.  Geneva's record fell to 8-17 overall, 5-13 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Waynesburg improved to 14-11 overall, 10-8 in the PAC.

Geneva held its only lead early in the game, as senior Lydia Songer's layup gave the Golden Tornadoes a 4-2 lead.  Waynesburg scored the next seven points to go up 11-4, and the Yellow Jackets wouldn't relinquish the lead again.  Waynesburg pushed the lead to 18-8 before five quick points from junior Callie Ford closed the gap to 18-13 at the end of the first quarter.

The Golden Tornadoes battled in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 26-23 as Ford carried the offense.  Waynesburg put together another run at that point, pushing the lead to 34-23, the largest of the first half, before Geneva closed to within 39-32 at the halftime break.  Ford finished the half with 16 points, while senior Jodie Carlson added 10 points.

Waynesburg stretched the lead back out at the start of the third quarter, scoring the first nine points of the half to go ahead 48-32, and Geneva could never get closer than eleven points the rest of the way as the Golden Tornadoes couldn't find a way to slow down the Yellow Jackets' offense.  Waynesburg led 58-43 at the end of the third quarter before closing out the victory, 82-62.

"I thought we played hard and did some nice things," Head Coach Lori Wynn said afterwards.  "Waynesburg is really tough at home and their size bothered us some.  But I loved our effort!"

Ford had another big game, finishing with a game-high 26 points, including 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.  Freshman Lauren Tipton added 14 points, all but two coming in the second half, while Carlson finished with 10 points.  Senior Addy Knetzer led Waynesburg with 21 points.

With the loss, Geneva finishes the regular season as the #7 seed in the PAC playoffs and will travel to play the #5 seed Bethany Bison for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff on Monday night.
