Women Can’t Stay With Grove City

Beaver Falls, PA—On a night in which Geneva celebrated the one year anniversary of Head Coach Lori Wynn's return from her battle with cancer, it was only fitting that Geneva host Grove City, a school that gave Coach Wynn and the Golden Tornadoes a lot of support during that battle.  Unfortunately for Geneva, despite hanging with the Wolverines for most of the first three quarters, Grove City pulled away in the final period for a 72-53 victory.  Geneva fell to 6-16 overall, 3-12 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Grove City improved to 14-8, 9-6 in the PAC.

Bothered by Grove City's defensive pressure, Geneva struggled to run offense effectively in the first quarter, and the result was eight turnovers, matching its point total as the Golden Tornadoes trailed 21-8 at the end of the quarter.

Geneva rebounded midway through the second quarter.  Trailing 28-13, Geneva finished the half on a 15-4 run to close the deficit to 32-28 going into the locker room.  Junior Callie Ford, who was honored after the game for passing 1,000 career points in the game at Thomas More on Saturday, was the catalyst for the run, as she finished the first half with 14 points to lead all scorers.

Geneva continued to hang with the more highly regarded Wolverines for most of the third quarter, but the Golden Tornadoes could never get closer than four points.  They trailed 44-38 with four minutes remaining in the quarter when Grove City went on an 8-0 run to go up 52-38.  Geneva cut the deficit back down to eight points at the end of the quarter, 52-44, on a tip-in at the buzzer by freshman Kaitlyn Totani, but Grove City pulled away in the final quarter for the 72-53 win.

"I thought we played hard tonight," Coach Wynn said afterwards.  "They beat us easily just a few weeks ago, and I thought we played much tougher this time around.  Grove City is a really good team and Coach Fuss does such a great job with them."

Ford led the offense once again, finishing with 21 points while grabbing a game-high eight rebounds.  Senior Jodie Carlson also scored in double figures, finishing with 11 points.  While Geneva shot 50% in the first half, the Golden Tornadoes struggled after halftime, shooting just 32%, and the 24 turnovers against the Grove City pressure proved too much to overcome.  Senior Lexie Cartwright, who finished with 22 points, led Grove City.

Geneva hosts Chatham this Saturday for its final home game of the season.  Tipoff for Senior Day will be at 5:30 p.m. as the Golden Tornadoes say goodbye to seniors Carlson, Lydia Songer, Rachel Moore, and Amanda Knecht.
