Baseball Streak Reaches Eleven

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team had to travel to Waynesburg University on Saturday to find a field that was clear of snow, as Geneva's home field was not playable for the scheduled home doubleheader against Clarks Summit University.  Despite the extra travel, Geneva managed to win both games to extend its winning streak to 11 games, winning 7-2 and 11-3.  Geneva's record improved to 13-2, while Clarks Summit fell to 0-11.

Clarks Summit struck first in game one when the Defenders plated a run in the top of the second.  However, Geneva responded it with its best inning of the game, scoring five times in the bottom of the second.  Junior Dillon Taggart had a two-run single, while junior Josh Baptiste and seniors Vinny Howells and Forrest Beighley also added RBIs.

Geneva added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and the Golden Tornadoes rode starter freshman Jacob Cardenas, who went four innings and gave up just three hits and two runs, and strong relief pitching to the 7-2 win.  Cardenas improved to 3-0 on the season.  Senior Joey Luciana and junior Jericho Hilling each contributed two hits to the victory.

In the second game, Geneva immediately took advantage of wildness from Clarks Summit's starting pitcher, Noah Barnhart.  The first four batters reached on three walks and a hit batter, and then freshman Garrison Wieland cleared the bases with a three-run double.  Two more Geneva batters walked before Barnhart was pulled, as Geneva finished the inning with six runs on only two hits.

After Clarks Summit scored twice in the top of the third, Geneva added three runs in the bottom of the inning, the big hit coming on a 2-run double from Luciana, and then two more in the fourth on a 2-run single from Howells, and Geneva closed out the victory, 11-3.

Pagaduan led the offense, going 4-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Beighley also reached base all four times he went to the plate, going 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and an RBI.  Luciana and Wieland each added three RBIs.  Senior Anthony Demeo went four innings, giving up seven hits and two runs, to pick up his first victory on the season.

Geneva heads back out onto the road next week, with two road doubleheaders against Medaille on Thursday, March 29, and against Westminster on Saturday, March 31.  The Golden Tornadoes will return home when they host Waynesburg on Wednesday, April 4.
