Struggles Continue at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team's slide continued on Monday afternoon at Saint Vincent, as the Golden Tornadoes lost a doubleheader 5-4 and 14-1.  After starting the season 8-2, Geneva has lost its last six games.  Geneva's record is now even at 8-8, 0-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Saint Vincent improved to 11-3, 2-0 in the PAC.

The first game proved to be a story of missed opportunities. Geneva had a chance to jump out to an early lead after loading the bases with one out in the first inning, but the Golden Tornadoes were unable to push across a run.

Saint Vincent took advantage by scoring two runs in each of the first two innings to take an early 4-0 lead.  Geneva responded with two runs in the top of the third on RBIs from freshman Kyleigh Jo Ward and junior Ashley Grow to cut the lead in half.  Saint Vincent added another run in its half of the inning to go up 5-3.

At that point sophomore pitcher Bobbi Ann Theiss settled down, keeping Saint Vincent off the board the rest of the game.  Geneva rallied for two runs in the fourth on RBIs from junior Ericka Hess and freshman Marina Manuppelli, but Geneva wasted a chance for more by leaving the bases loaded with one out again.  The missed opportunity would prove costly as Geneva failed to generate any more offense the rest of the game, losing 5-4.

Hess led the offense with three hits, while Manuppelli and junior Haley Sainato added two hits apiece.  Geneva actually outhit Saint Vincent ten to five, but the Golden Tornadoes could not come up with the big hit when they needed it.  Theiss pitched the complete game, going six innings and giving up five hits and five runs in picking up the loss, moving her record to 6-3 on the season.

In the second game, Geneva actually opened the scoring by pushing across a run in the top of the first.  From there it was all downhill.  Ward struggled from the circle, giving up four runs in each of the first two innings as the Golden Tornadoes fell behind 8-1.  Saint Vincent put the game away with six runs in the fourth, and the game was called after the fifth inning due to the margin, 14-1.

Geneva managed just three hits in the second game, and Ward's record dropped to 1-4 on the season.

Geneva has a scheduled home doubleheader on Thursday against Mount Aloysius starting at 3:30 p.m.  However, with rain in the forecast, those games could be postponed.
