Offense Struggles Against Hilbert

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Geneva College baseball team continued its stretch of games in Florida on Tuesday afternoon, and the Golden Tornadoes dropped a game to Hilbert College, 7-4, as Geneva struggled to get its offense going against the Hawks.  Geneva's record evened at 2-2 on the season, while Hilbert improved to 2-3.

The game started promisingly as Geneva had runners at second and third with one out in the first inning, but a lineout and a groundout kept the Golden Tornadoes off the board.

The first inning proved pivotal for Hilbert as well.  The first three hitters all got on base, on two singles and an error, to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead, and then Mathew Sokolski homered to put Hilbert up 4-0 before Geneva had recorded an out.

Freshman pitcher Dillon Bickerton, making the first start of his career, settled down from there, pitching four innings and only giving up one more unearned run.  Unfortunately, the offense struggled against Hilbert starting pitcher Winfred Nelson.  After a leadoff single in the second inning from junior Mark Overmier, Nelson didn't allow a hit over the next five innings, giving up only one walk, which was erased on the next play on a double play.

Geneva finally got to Nelson for a run in the seventh after a leadoff triple from senior Joey Luciana led to a run, and the Golden Tornadoes had a chance for more as the next two batters got on to give Geneva runners at second and third with nobody out.  However, Nelson got the next three hitters on a strikeout and two pop-ups to get out of the jam with Hilbert still leading 6-1.

Nelson departed to start the eighth, and the Geneva offense was finally able to get going against the Hilbert bullpen, as Geneva scored three runs in the inning to cut the lead to 7-4.  Unfortunately, those were the last runs that either team scored as Hilbert closed out the win in the ninth.

"This was a tough loss," Head Coach Alan Sumner said.  "We need to get back to playing good defensive baseball if we want to be competitive."

Luciana led the offense, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.  Overmier and senior Tyler Pagaduan also had multiple hits on the afternoon, but Geneva was unable to get the timely hit when runners were in scoring position.  Bickerton got the loss, going four innings in his debut, giving up five runs, but just three were earned.  Geneva has given up nine unearned runs in the last two games, a major reason for the back-to-back losses.

Geneva gets two more shots against this same Hilbert team tomorrow evening, as the Golden Tornadoes have a doubleheader at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
