Bethany Sweeps Baseball

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Geneva College baseball team's struggles over the past two weeks continued on Friday afternoon, dropping two games to Bethany College by scores of 6-5 and 16-12, as Geneva has lost five of its last six games.  These were Bethany's first home games of the season after its field was flooded earlier in the spring and was just finished being repaired this week.  Geneva fell to 17-8, 6-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Bethany improved to 7-16, 4-6 in the PAC.

In game one, Geneva fell down early, as freshman Jacob Cardenas gave up two runs in the first inning, with a Geneva error aiding Bethany.  Junior Jericho Hilling doubled home a run in the fourth to cut the deficit in half, but Bethany answered with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to go up 6-1.

It wasn't until the eighth inning that Geneva was able to get its offense going.  Geneva scored three runs, but the Golden Tornadoes left the bases loaded, leaving the score at 6-4.  Senior Forrest Beighley, freshman Garrison Wieland, and junior Mark Overmier all collected RBIs in the inning.

Geneva made one final attempt in the ninth, scoring once, but the Golden Tornadoes were unable to come up with the tying run, losing 6-5.  Seniors Tyler Pagaduan and Joey Luciana, along with Wieland, each had two hits.  Cardenas picked up the loss, moving his record to 4-3 on the season.  Freshman Dylan O'Rourke once again gave Geneva a lift in relief, pitching 3.2 innings without giving up a run.

Game two proved to be a high scoring affair, and unfortunately Geneva once again found itself in a big hole.  Bethany jumped to a big early lead against starter Josh Grant, who didn't get a lot of support from his defense.  Bethany scored a run in the first and two more in the second before the Bison scored six runs, aided by two errors, in the third.  Five of the runs were unearned.

Geneva tried to get its offense going in the fourth inning, scoring three times in the inning, but Bethany continued to put up runs, scoring three more in the fourth and fifth innings to go up 15-4.  A late rally fell short as Geneva lost game two, 16-12.

O'Rourke led the offense in game two, going 2-for-3 with five RBIs.  Luciana went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, while junior Dillon Taggart added three hits and senior Vinny Howells two.  Josh Grant picked up the loss to move to 4-2 on the season.

Geneva has a quick turnaround, welcoming first place Washington & Jefferson to College Hill for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
