Softball Struggles Against Thiel

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – This was clearly not how the Geneva College softball team was hoping to finish its season as it entered the last week of the year.  The Golden Tornadoes hosted Thiel College on Thursday afternoon, a team that was tied with Geneva in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) standings coming into the game, yet Geneva was unable to be competitive in either game, losing game one, 11-2, and game two, 11-1.  Geneva is now 13-17, 5-11 in the PAC, while Thiel improved to 12-20, 7-9 in the PAC.

Thiel jumped on Geneva's starting pitcher, freshman Kyleigh Jo Ward, who had been so good over her last six starts.  Thiel scored a run in the first, three more in the second, and then the Tomcats knocked Ward out of the game with three more runs in the third.

After two more runs by Thiel in the top of the fourth to go up 9-0, Geneva finally got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a double from freshman Madison Schultz and a single from senior Hannah Logan.  But that was all Geneva could generate offensively, and Thiel eventually won 11-2.

Freshman Angel Rowe stayed hot, going 3-for-3 in the game.  Schultz also added two hits.

Unfortunately for Geneva, game two didn't go any better.  Ward started again and after Thiel scored a run in the first, the Tomcats pushed across six more in the second inning to break the game open again.  Geneva couldn't generate much offensively, and the Tomcats eventually won, 11-1.  Geneva managed just three hits in the second game.

Geneva will finish its season on Saturday as the Golden Tornadoes travel to Grove City for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
