Cardenas and a Comeback Lead to Sweep

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team keeps finding ways to win, spanning the spectrum on Friday with a big win, 10-0, in game one against Waynesburg, and then a dramatic comeback walk-off victory in game two, 8-7, to sweep the visiting Yellow Jackets.  Geneva is now 16-3 on the season, 5-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Waynesburg stands at 5-15, 1-5 in the PAC.

Geneva had a chance to jump out early in game one, loading the bases with just one out in the first inning, but Waynesburg came up with a big double play to keep the game scoreless, and neither team was able to plate a run through the first four innings.

The key inning came in the fifth, as freshman pitcher Jacob Cardenas was able to get out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the top of the inning, and Geneva responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, aided by two Waynesburg errors.

Geneva put the game away in the last two innings.  Senior Joey Luciana continued his hot streak with a two-run single in the seventh, and Geneva ended the game in the bottom of the eighth by scoring five runs, as the game was called with Geneva reaching a ten run margin.  Freshman Garrison Wieland had a two-run single in the inning, and Luciana scored the game-ending run on a wild pitch.

Cardenas was excellent on the afternoon, pitching all eight innings for his first complete-game shutout of the season, moving his record to 4-0.  He gave up eight hits while striking out six.  Senior Forrest Beighley finished the game 3-for-5, scoring three runs and driving in two.  Both Luciana and Wieland each added two hits and three RBIs, while senior Tyler Pagaduan scored three times.

In game two, Geneva was its own worst enemy for much of the game as Golden Tornado pitchers struggled with their command.  Freshman Daunte Hill managed to pitch around six walks and a hit batter to keep Waynesburg scoreless through 3.2 innings, enabling Geneva to take a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two more in the third.

The lack of control finally caught up with Geneva in the later innings, though, as Waynesburg took advantage of the eight walks and six hit batters Geneva issued on the day to break through with three runs in the fifth to tie the game, then two more in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.

Geneva had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but Geneva could not push a run across and Waynesburg made them pay with two more runs in the top of the eighth to go up 7-3.

However, just as it seemed Geneva was headed for a split on the day, the Golden Tornadoes rallied again.  They scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth on RBIs from Beighley and junior Jericho Hilling, though Geneva once again left the bases loaded, leaving the Golden Tornadoes trailing, 7-5, heading to the ninth.

Undeterred, senior Richie Rowe kept Waynesburg scoreless in the ninth, setting the stage for Geneva's dramatic comeback.  The key hit was a two-run triple with one out from senior Vinny Howells, who then raced home with the winning run on a sacrifice fly from Beighley for the walk-off win, 8-7.

Luciana had another big game, going 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Beighley was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, while Hilling finished 2-for-2 with three walks and three RBIs.  Junior Jacob Yarnell was also key, coming in late in the game as a replacement and going 2-for-2 with two runs scored in the last two innings.  Rowe relieved sophomore Josh Grant in the eighth and pitched the last two innings to move his record to 4-1 on the season.

"It's always very satisfying to win a conference doubleheader," Head Coach Alan Sumner said.  "We received great pitching from Cardenas in game one, with timely hitting to carry us.  Game two may have been the first game all year where our pitching really struggled, but everyone kept battling and we were able to get the great comeback in the end.  Rowe was big as he really settled things down on the mound those last two innings."

Geneva has a short turnaround as it travels to take on Saint Vincent tomorrow, April 7, for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.  The Golden Tornadoes return back home next Tuesday, April 10, for a doubleheader against Penn State New Kensington.
