GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team finished up a very solid season by splitting a doubleheader at Thiel College on Friday afternoon, winning game one, 7-4, before losing game two, 19-8. Geneva closed out the season with a 19-14 record, 7-11 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Thiel is now 15-21, 11-7 in the PAC.
In game one, Geneva opened the scoring in the top of the first on an RBI double from senior Forrest Beighley. Thiel responded against senior starter Richie Rowe with a run in the bottom of the first and two more in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Geneva responded with three runs in the top of the third to take back the lead, 4-3. Beighley and senior Joey Luciana had RBIs in the inning. From there Rowe settled down, holding the Tomcats scoreless over the next four innings. Geneva added a run in the fifth on another RBI from Luciana, and then added a couple of insurance runs in the ninth on an RBI triple by Luciana and a Thiel error, closing out the victory, 7-4.
Luciana led the way offensively, going 4-for-5 with one run and three RBIs. Beighley was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, while seniors Vinny Howells and Dan Staub also added two hits. Rowe picked up the win, his fifth of the season, giving up three runs over six innings. Freshman Jacob Cardenas finished up a strong first year with three innings of relief to pick up the save.
In game two, Thiel jumped on sophomore starter Josh Grant early. Thiel scored three runs in the bottom of the second. Geneva responded in the top of the third with two runs on RBIs from senior Tyler Pagaduan and Howells, but Thiel put up five more runs in the bottom of the third, knocking Grant out of the game and opening an 8-2 lead. Thiel added three more runs in the fourth to make it 12-3.
Luciana hit a 2-run home run in the top of the fifth, but Thiel continued to score runs, adding four more in the fifth to go up 16-5, before eventually closing out the win 19-8. The second game was called in the bottom of the seventh after a thunderstorm rolled in.
Luciana led the offense again in the second game, going 2-for-2 with a homer, two runs, and two RBIs. Sophomore Jacob Poremski and freshman Garrison Wieland also added two hits in the loss.
Geneva loses a strong senior class, especially offensively, but Coach Sumner and the returning Golden Tornadoes will look to build upon their winning season.
