BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – On the second night of the Nate Ferraco Classic held on the newly renovated Reeves Field, the Geneva men's soccer team faced a very strong Lycoming squad and could not generate much offensively, eventually losing 2-0 to the Warriors. Geneva fell to 0-1-1 while Lycoming improved to 1-0-1.
Lycoming was coming off a season in 2017 that saw it go 19-3 and advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament, so Geneva knew it would have its hands full on the evening. Lycoming pressured right away and had a great chance in front of the net just minutes into the game that was saved by senior goalkeeper
Luke Nolan.
The Warriors kept the pressure up, though, and eventually they were rewarded when Evan Zewe knocked in a loose ball in front of the net in the 28
th minute, giving the visitors a lead they would ultimately never relinquish.
Lycoming put the game away in 80
th minute on a nice set piece that Josh Cruz touched into the back of the net, putting the finishing touches on the 2-0 victory.
Lycoming outshot Geneva 11 to 4, indicative of the control they had throughout most of the match. It might have been worse if not for a couple strong saves from Nolan.
"I thought we battled really hard tonight," Head Coach
Gary Dunda said. "But give a lot of credit to Lycoming. They're a good team, they make you pay when you make small mistakes, and they're very dangerous on restarts. I'm proud of our guys and I thought we had some very good moments, but those moments just need to be extended."
Geneva will head out onto the road for the first time this season next Tuesday, September 4, when it faces Franciscan at 4:00 p.m. Geneva will be back home next on Wednesday, September 12, against Penn State Behrend.
