Volleyball Picks Up Win over Allegheny

BUFFALO, NY – The Geneva women's volleyball team picked up a win on the first night of the Buffalo State Tournament on Friday, defeating Allegheny College in four sets, 25-13, 25-16, 25-27, 25-22.  Geneva improved to 6-3 overall, while Allegheny fell to 3-8.

Geneva dominated the match early, winning both of the first two sets easily as the Golden Tornadoes jumped on the Gators at the beginning.  The third set proved to be a much tighter affair, though, as Allegheny managed to pull out a 27-25 win to force a fourth set.  The fourth set proved to be competitive as well, but Geneva was able to hold onto the set, 25-22, to pull out the victory.

"Tonight we worked a new offense and were pleased with the result," Head Coach Wendy Smith said.  "We had moments when we needed to work out the kinks, but overall it was a solid night.  We held together despite a sweltering hot gym, so it took added effort to stay focused."

Senior Allyssa Kerr and freshman Elana Hoppel both had 11 kills, while junior Kacey Costal added 10.  Sophomore Daphne Hunsinger finished with another double-double, contributing 36 assists and 13 digs.  Freshman Kayla Coughlin also added a team-high 18 digs.

Geneva gets right back on the court in the morning when it plays host Buffalo State at 11:00 a.m.  The Golden Tornadoes then wrap up the tournament with a match against Case Western Reserve at 1:00 p.m.
