BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – If the Geneva College men's soccer team was suffering any effects from its double-overtime game at Mount Union last night, it didn't show for most of the match on Tuesday night against Allegheny, as the Golden Tornadoes found the strength, less than 24 hours after returning home, to come up with a 3-1 win over the visiting Gators. Geneva improved to 3-4-1, while Allegheny fell to 3-5-1.
The match saw senior co-captain goalkeeper
Luke Nolan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) return to the starting lineup after a two week break, and Nolan was called on early to make a reflex save from point blank range just seven minutes in to keep the game scoreless. Freshman
Alex Yoder (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) then put Geneva up in the 17
th minute when he turned and took a low shot from ten yards out that found its way through traffic and into the net.
Geneva doubled its lead in the 36
th minute on a play that began from a corner kick. Junior
Jake Broadwick (McKees Rocks, Pa./Robinson Township Christian) took the corner, and the kick came in low, allowing Allegheny to attempt to clear it. But the Gators' clearance went right back to Broadwick, who then picked out sophomore
Trevor Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Christian) on the back post, and Smith's header easily found the back of the net, giving Geneva a 2-0 lead as it went into halftime.
The second half became more sloppy, as some Geneva tired legs seemed to impact the Golden Tornadoes late. Despite that, sophomore Chas Baxa (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) made it 3-0 in the 80
th minute when freshman
Avery Wenger (Chambersburg, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) made a nice run in the box along the end line and then laid it back to an open Baxa who put it into the corner of the goal. Allegheny would finally get on the board in the 87
th minute off a poor Geneva clearance that left Nolan off his line, but it was far too late as Geneva finished off the 3-1 victory.
"It's always great to bounce back after a tough loss and get a good win," Head Coach
Gary Dunda said afterwards. "I thought we had contributions from a lot of different guys tonight. The guys were all pulling in the same direction, trying to get better, and now we're looking forward to starting PAC play against Bethany on Saturday."
A strong last 20 minutes from Allegheny gave the Gators an edge on shots, 13-10, although Geneva still managed a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Nolan made four saves and had a chance at his first shutout of the season until the late Allegheny goal.
Geneva returns home on Saturday for its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match of the season on Saturday when Bethany comes to town. Start time is 1:30 p.m.
