BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team came into Saturday's home tri-match off one of its toughest losses of the season on Thursday night at Washington & Jefferson, and the Golden Tornadoes appeared to let out some frustration against Thiel and Waynesburg, sweeping both teams. Geneva defeated Thiel 25-19, 25-15, 25-22, and then followed that up with a victory over Waynesburg 25-5, 25-15, 25-17. Geneva improved to 10-7 overall, and it evened its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) record at 4-4.
In the first match, Geneva took control early. After Thiel took a 7-6 lead, one of only a few times Geneva trailed all afternoon, the Golden Tornadoes went on a 7-2 run to take control of the set, 13-9. From there Geneva never let the visiting Tomcats back into the set, finishing things off on a kill by junior
Kacey Costal (Salem, Ohio/Salem).
In the second set, with the score tied 5-5, Geneva scored nine straight points off the serving of sophomore
Daphne Hunsinger (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock), and Geneva won the second set on an attack error from Thiel.
After having some trouble finishing teams off the past week, Geneva used a 6-1 run midway through the third set to take a 17-11 lead, and the Golden Tornadoes completed the victory on a kill from senior
Sydney McNulty (State College, Pa./State College Area).
Hunsinger finished with another double-double with 32 assists and 17 digs. McNulty led the offense with 14 kills. Freshman
Kayla Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) led the defense with 22 digs.
In the second match of the day, Geneva took care of a struggling Waynesburg squad, dominating the first set 25-5, which saw Geneva score eight straight points off the serve of Hunsinger, including three aces.
The big margin allowed Head Coach
Wendy Smith to play a number of players the final two sets, and everyone contributed as Geneva pulled away in each set, finishing off the Yellow Jackets in set three on a kill by freshman
Hannah Dusse (Plant City, Fl./Lakeland Christian).
Geneva spread the contributions around in the second match, as eight different players had at least three kills in the match, led by McNulty's six. Hunsinger had 23 assists, while Coughlin had a team-high 13 digs.
"It was important to get back into the win column after a couple tough losses in the past week," Head Coach
Wendy Smith said. "We've got some ground to make up because of some matches we let slip away, so this was a good start at getting some momentum and confidence back, especially as we look ahead to some tough road matches coming up."
Geneva will head to Westminster on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. match against the first place Titans, followed later in the week with a non-conference matchup at John Carroll on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
