Women’s Volleyball Defeats Chatham

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball opened the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday, welcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Chatham University to Metheny Fieldhouse, and the Golden Tornadoes came away with a 3-1 victory, 25-20, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21.  Geneva improved to 3-2 overall, 1-0 in the PAC, while Chatham fell to 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the PAC.

In the first set, Chatham jumped out to an early lead, 10-6.  The Golden Tornadoes responded, though, with a 14-3 run to take control of the set, 20-13, before finishing off the set, 25-20.

In the second set, Geneva jumped on the Cougars early, going up 10-2, and the Golden Tornadoes won that set easily, 25-16.  Chatham managed to win the third set by finishing the back and forth set on an 8-1 run after Geneva led 18-17, but the Golden Tornadoes finished off the victory in the fourth set, going ahead 22-14, before holding off a late charge from Chatham, 25-21.  Senior Allyssa Kerr finished off the last two points with kills to close out the win.

"It's been a long wait to play on our home court in front of our great fans," Head Coach Wendy Smith said afterwards.  "I am pleased with the team's overall performance, but we are still shaking off the rust and trying to acclimate our freshmen.  This team has exciting volleyball ahead!"

Sophomore Daphne Hunsinger once again led the way for Geneva with 37 assists, 18 digs, and 11 kills.  Kerr had a team-high 15 kills while adding 20 digs, while junior Kacey Costal shook off an early rolled ankle to contribute 11 kills.  Sophomore Grace Holdeman once again led the team with 28 digs.

Geneva will head back out onto the road this weekend to take part in the Franciscan Dig Pink Tournament on Saturday.  The Golden Tornadoes play La Roche College at 12:00 p.m. and then follow that up with a match against Franciscan at 2:00 p.m.  Geneva's next home match is on Wednesday, September 12, at 7:00 p.m. when it welcomes PAC rival Westminster to Metheny Fieldhouse.
