WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team traveled to Washington & Jefferson College on Wednesday night knowing it would have to play its best game of the season in order to knock off a strong W&J squad, and despite hanging with the Presidents for a half, the Golden Tornadoes eventually fell, 56-43. W&J improved to 13-5, 9-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Geneva fell to 2-15, 0-10 in the PAC.
W&J started well by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to open the game, but Geneva hung tough early, and after back-to-back 3-pointers from sophomore
Alexis Gates (New Waterford, Ohio/Crestview) and senior
Callie Ford (New Middleton, Ohio/Springfield Local), the Golden Tornadoes had tied the game at 8-8. However, W&J scored the final 11 points of the quarter to go up 19-8 at the end of the first.
After W&J opened the second quarter with another 3-pointer, Geneva slowly began to chip away at the lead, and when Ford hit another 3-pointer with less than a minute to go before half, Geneva managed to close the deficit to 26-21 heading into the break.
W&J opened the second half by scoring the first seven points. After two free throws from sophomore
Lauren Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy), W&J put the game away with eleven more straight points to take its biggest lead of the game, 44-23. Geneva did close the gap to 52-41 with two minutes remaining, but the Presidents closed out the win, 56-43.
"I thought we showed improvement tonight," said Head Coach
Lori Wynn. "Defensively we played better than we had been against one of the best teams in our conference. Overall I felt like we played well enough to give us some positives heading into the remainder of the season."
Ford led the team with 15 points. Gates added ten points, while Tipton added nine points and eight rebounds. Geneva struggled offensively, shooting just 25% for the game, including just 4-of-19 (19%) from 3-point range. Danielle Parker led W&J with 14 points.
Geneva returns home for its final non-conference game of the season on Saturday when it hosts #2 ranked and undefeated Thomas More University at 1:30 p.m.
