BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team played its final non-conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon against a familiar foe, powerful #2 Thomas More University. Thomas More left the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) at the end of the season last year, but the Saints are just as strong as they ever were, and Geneva was no match for the nationally ranked and undefeated squad as Thomas More won 90-57. Thomas More improved to 23-0, while Geneva fell to 2-16.
An early layup for sophomore
Lauren Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) put Geneva on the board after Thomas More hit a 3-pointer to start the game. From there a red-hot Saints team scored 19 straight points to go up 22-2 before senior
Callie Ford (New Middleton, Ohio/Springfield Local) hit a 3-pointer for Geneva's second basket of the game. Thomas More continued to hit shots, though, stretching its lead to 30-5 before taking a 30-9 lead after the first quarter. The Saints were 13-of-15 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, in the opening quarter.
Geneva kept with the Saints in the second quarter and closed to within 38-20 on another 3-pointer from Ford with four minutes remaining in the half. Thomas More closed on a 15-3 run, though, to take a commanding 53-23 lead into the break. Ford led the offense with 11 points in the half, while Tipton had five points and seven rebounds.
Thomas More opened the second half with 14 straight points to take its largest lead of the game, 67-23. From there the Saints substituted freely with their bench, as did Geneva, and the game finished out with a Thomas More 90-57 victory.
"Thomas More is probably the best team in Division III," said Head Coach
Lori Wynn. "They hit us with a huge run to start the game, but I thought after that we battled and had some positive moments."
Ford led the offense with 27 points, including 7-of-15 shooting from 3-point range. Tipton finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Geneva shot just 30% for the game, while Thomas More finished at an impressive 57%. All-American Madison Temple led the Saints with 23 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
Geneva gets back into PAC action next Wednesday when the Golden Tornadoes travel to Waynesburg University for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
