GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Geneva men's soccer team made the trip to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City on Saturday evening, looking forward to an opportunity to face off against the PAC-preseason favorite Wolverines. Unfortunately, two defensive mistakes midway through the first half proved costly, as both led to Grove City goals in an otherwise even game, and Geneva ended up falling 2-0. Grove City improved to 4-6-2, 2-0-1 in the PAC, while Geneva fell to 5-7 overall, 1-1 in the PAC.
Grove City scored first in the 13
th minute when some miscommunication between junior goalkeeper
Nate Burkhart (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) and his backline on who was going to handle a long ball into the box allowed Grove City's Justin Lind to get to the ball first, and Lind poked it into Geneva's net to put the Golden Tornadoes into an early hole.
Just sixteen minutes later, in the 29
th minute, Geneva missed on a chance to clear a Grove City cross in the box, and the ball found its way to an open Wolverine, Seth Wade, who curled it into the upper corner of the goal to make it 2-0, which is where things stayed going into halftime.
Geneva's best chance to score may have come in the 87
th minute, when sophomore
Alex Yoder's (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) shot from near the edge of the box that was headed into the corner of the goal was just pushed wide by a diving save from Grove City's goalkeeper, and the game finished out with a disappointing 2-0 loss for the Golden Tornadoes.
Geneva finished the game with a 6-5 advantage in shots, including a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. Unfortunately, both of Grove City's shots on goal found the back of the net. Yoder finished with two shots, the only player from either team to register more than one in the match.
Geneva returns home next Wednesday for another PAC matchup, this one against Chatham beginning at 5:00 p.m.
