WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College women's tennis team saw its fall season come to an end on Friday afternoon in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) semifinals, with the #1-seed Grove City defeating the Golden Tornadoes, 5-0. Geneva ends the season 8-5 overall, while Grove City improved to 10-1 and advances to the championship match tomorrow.
Geneva was not able to pick a point against the two-time defending PAC Champion Wolverines, who finished the regular season undefeated in the conference, before Grove City won its fifth point, clinching the victory and ending the match. Seniors
Bekah Locke (Atwater, Ohio/Marlington) and
Victoria Hoal (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) came the closest during the doubles portion, dropping their match 8-5.
Grove City's sweep in the doubles action meant the Wolverines needed just two points during the singles competition, and the Wolverines achieved that with wins in #3 and #5 singles. Senior
Jana Newberry (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) had won the first set in her match in #4 singles, but the final four singles matches were all called once Grove City got to five points.
"We fought hard today, but Grove City showed why it's the top seed in the playoffs," said Head Coach
Mandee Craft. "Despite the loss, I'm so proud of how we've played hard and battled all season long, and making it to the semifinals is something for the squad to be proud of as well."
The loss completes the fall season for the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva will have a couple matches in the spring, but the loss today mostly brings to a close the careers of a very strong senior class, including Locke, Hoal, Newberry and
Rachael Letterman (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area), four of Geneva's top players this season.
