Women’s Volleyball Continues Strong Play with Sweep of Oberlin

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team continued its recent success with a Saturday afternoon sweep (25-17, 25-20, 26-24) of Oberlin College.  The victory is Geneva's fifth straight, with the Golden Tornadoes having dropped just one set during their five-match winning streak.  Geneva improved to 19-7 overall, while Oberlin fell to 9-13.

Geneva opened the first set with five straight points, with junior Daphne Hunsinger (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) picking up two aces early on.  The Golden Tornadoes built their lead to 10-3 before Oberlin responded with a run to close to within 15-14 midway through the set.  Geneva steadied itself, though, with four straight points to regain control of the set, 19-14, and the Golden Tornadoes finished the set off with four more straight points, the last on a kill from sophomore Elana Hoppel (Castorland, N.Y./Lowville Academy and Central) to win 25-17.

The second set stayed tight early on, as neither team led by more than two points for the first part of the set.  With the score tied at 14-14, Geneva went on an 8-2 run to take command of things, with senior Kacey Costal (Salem, Ohio/Salem) picking up two kills in the stretch.  The Golden Tornadoes finished the set off on a Hunsinger kill, 25-20.

Oberlin had the better of the play early in the third set, going ahead 14-9 midway through.  The Golden Tornadoes erased that deficit quickly, though, with five straight points to even up the score.  Geneva eventually took its first lead of the set, 17-16, on another kill from Hunsinger.  The Golden Tornadoes built their lead to 23-19 before having to hold on for a 26-24 win on a service ace by freshman Hope Shook (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood-Antis).

"I feel like we're finally figuring out a good rotation, and it is showing with the way we are playing," said Head Coach Wendy Smith.  "We had a few moments where we didn't play well today, but that's going to happen over the course of the match.  We're really focused now on finishing this final week of the regular season well so that we can make some noise in the postseason."

Hunsinger had another strong match, finishing with 30 assists, 10 digs, seven kills and three aces.  Shook had a team-high 12 kills (.345 hitting percentage), while Costal added seven kills.   Sophomore Kayla Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) had a team-high 16 digs, with freshman Alyssa Hunsinger (Oley, Pa./High Point Baptist Academy) contributing 10 digs.

Geneva finishes its last week of the regular season with three matches next week, beginning with a home match against Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
