PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Geneva College men's volleyball team stayed hot on Wednesday night with a straight-set win over Alderson Broaddus 25-21, 25-21, 25-17. It was the second time this season that Geneva has swept the NCAA Division II Battlers, and the win moved Geneva's record to 10-2. Alderson Broaddus is still looking for its first win of the season, falling to 0-9.
Geneva jumped head early in first set, going up 10-4, with senior
Spencer York (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) picking up two early kills. Three straight points on the service of junior
Quinn McCracken (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver County Christian) put Geneva up 13-5. Geneva pushed its lead to 22-10 before Alderson Broaddus ripped off nine straight points to make it close, but the Golden Tornadoes closed out the set on a kill from sophomore
Dan Townsend (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver County Christian), 25-21.
Alderson Broaddus got off to a better start in the second set, going up 4-1. Geneva battled back to tie the score at 7-7 on a kill from sophomore
Anthony Baronio (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge). The Golden Tornadoes took their first lead of the set, 13-12, after two straight kills from York. The set stayed close the rest of the way. With Geneva clinging to a 22-21 lead, though, the Golden Tornadoes scored the last three points, the last on an ace from senior
Matt Peters (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area), to win 25-21.
A couple of early kills from freshman
Peter Barbato (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver County Christian) put Geneva up 4-1 in the third set, and the Golden Tornadoes never trailed the rest of the way. The Battlers would get within two points, 8-6, but Geneva went on a 6-2 run to push the lead to 14-8. The Golden Tornadoes closed out both the set, and the match, from there, with Townsend finishing things off with another kill, 25-17.
"We were a little streaky tonight," said Head Coach
Curt Conser. "Overall, though, I thought we played pretty well, and we showed some improvements in a couple of areas that we've really been focused on lately."
McCracken finished with a team-high 12 kills on a hitting percentage of .389. Barbato, Townsend, and York each added seven kills. Barbato was especially effective, with a .545 hitting percentage. Baronio led the team with 33 assists and six digs.
Geneva makes a long trip out to Indiana this Saturday to play two matches against Siena Heights, at 3:00 p.m., and against Goshen, at 5:00 p.m. The Golden Tornadoes will be back in Metheny Fieldhouse next Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. match against Hiram.
