ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Geneva College men's volleyball team pulled out another dramatic five-set victory on Tuesday night over Mount Union, using a late run to win the final set in comeback fashion. The final score ended up 25-21, 17-25, 22-25, 25-23, 19-17. Geneva improved to 7-2, while Mount Union fell to 4-8.
Trailing 6-5 early in the first set, Geneva used a 7-1 run to take a 12-7 lead. Geneva stretched its lead to 22-14 before holding on for a 25-21 win on a kill from sophomore
Dan Townsend (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver County Christian).
Mount Union used a run midway through the second set to take control of the next set. With the Raiders leading 9-8, Mount Union went on its own 7-1 run to go up 16-9, and Geneva could never recover in losing 25-17.
Mount Union carried that momentum into the third set and scored the first five points of the set. Geneva would eventually fight back to get within 18-17, but the Raiders closed out the set 25-22 to go up 2-1.
The fourth set proved tight though out, with neither team leading by more than three points. The set was tied at 10-10, 15-15, and 20-20. Geneva used kills from senior
Matt Peters (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) and
Quinn McCracken (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver County Christian) to go up 22-20, and the Golden Tornadoes did just enough to hold on for a 25-23 to send the game to a fifth set.
Tied at 8-8 in the final set, Mount Union scored three straight points, and the Raiders still maintained a 13-10 before Geneva closed with a burst. Geneva fought off three match points before sophomore
Anthony Baronio (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) and Townsend finished the match off with back-to-back kills, 19-17.
McCracken, fresh off being named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Player of the Week on Monday, led the way again with 18 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. He also added 11 digs. Peters and senior
Spencer York (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) each had nine kills, while Townsend finished with eight. Baronio led the team again with 44 assists and 18 digs.
Geneva returns home for a match on Friday against the preseason favorite in the AMCC, Wittenberg University, starting at 7:00 p.m. Geneva follows that up on Saturday with a home match against Messiah at 2:00 p.m.
