WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Things fell apart quickly for the Geneva College baseball team in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener on Thursday afternoon at Waynesburg University. The Yellow Jackets scored eight times in the first inning, and Waynesburg cruised from there in blowout fashion, 23-2. Waynesburg improved to 7-8, 1-0 in the PAC, while Geneva has now lost three straight games and falls under .500 at 4-5, 0-1 in the PAC.
Junior starting pitcher Josh Grant (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) had a rough outing, as Grant struggled with his command. Grant walked four batters and had four wild pitches in the first inning, and a key error with the bases loaded and two outs made the outing even worse. Grant eventually couldn't make it out of the opening frame, with the Yellow Jackets finishing the inning with eight runs on only four hits.
The Golden Tornado bullpen didn't have any more success than Grant, though. Waynesburg continued to pour it on against four Geneva relievers, with two runs in the second inning, a run in the third, five runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth, and four runs in the sixth. It wasn't until the seventh inning that Geneva scored and held Waynesburg scoreless.
All told, Geneva's pitching staff issued 17 walks in the game. Senior Josh Baptiste (Gasport, N.Y./Royalton Hartland Central) provided most of the offense, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Geneva hosts Waynesburg on Saturday for a doubleheader, the first home games of the season for the Golden Tornadoes. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m.
