SCRANTON, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team ended a seven-game losing streak on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with Clarks Summit University to pick up its first win since returning from Florida. The Golden Tornadoes won game one, 7-4, but then were shut out in game two, 2-0. Geneva's record is now 5-10, while Clarks Summit stands at 2-8.
In game one, Geneva struck for five runs in the top of the third inning, the big hit coming from sophomore
Garrison Wieland (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) who drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double. Clarks Summit responded with three runs in its half of the inning against junior starting pitching
Josh Grant (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) to make it 5-3.
Clarks Summit closed to 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Geneva responded with a run in the sixth on a Clarks Summit error, and then senior
Josh Baptiste (Gasport, N.Y./Royalton Hartland Central) drove in another insurance run with an RBI-double in the seventh. Sophomore
Jacob Cardenas (Homestead, Fla./Miami Killian) closed things out in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the save.
Grant picked up his first win of the season, pitching five innings, allowing six hits, four runs and three walks, while also striking out a career-high twelve batters. Wieland finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, while senior
Dillon Taggart (Livingston Manor, N.Y./Livingston Manor Central) was 1-for-2 with a triple and a run.
Unfortunately for Geneva, its offense never got going in game two against Clarks Summit starting pitcher Joshua Knight. The Golden Tornadoes never got a runner past second base against the Defenders.
Clarks Summit struck for the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the second off sophomore starting pitcher
Dylan O'Rourke (Hutchinson, Pa./Yough). It would be the only runs O'Rourke would allow in pitching a complete game, but it was all the offense Clarks Summit needed in picking up the split against the Golden Tornadoes, 2-0.
O'Rourke pitched six innings, giving up five hits, two walks and two runs, while striking out three. Geneva managed just five singles in the game, with senior
Mark Overmier (Crofton, Md./Mount St. Joseph) finishing 1-for-2 with a walk.
Geneva returns home for a game on Tuesday against Penn State New Kensington at 4:00 p.m.
