BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team entered Saturday's home doubleheader with Saint Vincent looking for its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win, and unfortunately the Golden Tornadoes couldn't pull out a victory in either game. Geneva lost in extra innings in the first game, 8-4, and then followed that up with a 9-0 loss in game two. Saint Vincent improved to 14-9, 7-4 in the PAC, while Geneva now stands at 5-13, 0-8 in the PAC.
The first game, which was scheduled to go just seven innings, started well, as Geneva scored twice in the bottom of the first on RBIs from senior
Jericho Hilling (Williamsburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and sophomore
Dylan O'Rourke (Hutchinson, Pa./Yough). Geneva added a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single from senior
Mark Overmier (Crofton, Md./Mount St. Joseph) to make it 3-0.
Saint Vincent scored its first run off sophomore starter
Jacob Cardenas (Homestead, Fla/Miami Killian) in the top of the fourth. The Bearcats then took the lead in the top of the fifth on a three-run home run from Bobby Finn, the PAC's leader in home runs.
Sophomore
Tyler Seliga (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) responded with a big two-out RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 4-4. Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.
Saint Vincent took control of the game in the top of the eighth, courtesy of three defensive miscues by the Golden Tornadoes. The Bearcats scores four times on just one hit, with all four runs unearned, and Saint Vincent closed out the bottom of the inning to win, 8-4.
Junior
Josh Grant (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) picked up the loss in relief, though all of the runs he gave up were unearned. His record is now 1-4. Sophomore
Dylan Van Sky (Denver, Colo./Thomas Jefferson) went 2-for-4 with a run to lead the offense, while Overmier finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Not much went right in the second game, which was also a seven inning game. Finn hit another home run for the Bearcats in the second inning off freshman starter
Marshall Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler) to give Saint Vincent an early 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats followed that up with five runs in the third inning to take command of the game, and Saint Vincent added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to complete the scoring. The Golden Tornadoes could never get going offensively against Saint Vincent's starter Casey Jones, losing 9-0.
Wheeler picked up the loss to move his record to 1-3. Geneva managed just four hits in the game. Freshman
Austin Willis (Temecula, Cali./Linfield Christian) reached base all three times, going 1-for-1 with a walk and a hit by pitch.
Geneva makes the return trip on Monday to take on Saint Vincent at 4:00 p.m. in the final game of the series.
