BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's tennis team traveled to Thiel College on Saturday afternoon in need of a victory, having lost three straight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matches, and the Golden Tornadoes did just that in defeating the Tomcats, 8-1. Geneva evened its overall record at 6-6, 2-3 in the PAC, while Thiel fell to 1-4, 0-3 in the PAC.
Unlike in the previous three matches where Geneva failed to pick up a point in doubles, the Golden Tornadoes swept all three doubles matches against Thiel. Sophomores
Alex Beck (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and
Nate Heidengren (Aliquippa, Pa./Beaver County Christian) picked up an 8-0 win in #1 doubles. Junior
Alex Greissinger (Erie, Pa./Northwest PAC Collegiate Academy) and sophomore
Drake Greenstein (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) won in #2 doubles, 8-1, and junior
Jesse Claudio (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and freshman
Josiah Shaver (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) picked up a narrow 8-7 win in #3 doubles.
That put Geneva in good position heading into singles, where the Golden Tornadoes won five of six matches. Heidengren, Greenstein, Greissinger, Shaver and senior
Wesley Larry (Wampum, Pa./Lincoln) all picked up straight-set wins in singles action.
"We played well today," said Head Coach
Mandee Craft. "Thiel has a lot of fight, and we had to be patient and play smart tennis to get the win."
Geneva finishes up PAC play this week with back-to-back home matches against Grove City on Wednesday and Waynesburg on Thursday.
