WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Geneva College women's team picked up a much-needed win on Thursday night after back-to-back losses, knocking off Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Waynesburg on the road, 8-1. Geneva improved to 4-3 overall, 2-2 in the PAC, while Waynesburg fell to 1-5, 0-3 in the PAC.
Geneva jumped ahead in doubles action to start the match. Senior
Rachael Letterman (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) and junior
Felicity Orndoff (New Stanton, Pa./Greensburg Catholic Central) picked up a win in #1 doubles, while senior
Jana Newberry (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and sophomore
Mady Paquet (Ellsworth, Wisc./Ellsworth) picked up a win in #2 doubles.
That gave the Golden Tornadoes an advantage heading into the singles portion of the match, which Geneva dominated. Letterman, Orndoff and Newberry all cruised in the first three singles matches, while Paquet, freshman
Emily Grove (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) and sophomore
Kaylee McCall (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) all worked hard to complete the singles sweep, with Grove battling back to win her match in three sets after dropping the first set.
"We had to fight through some tough winds and a much improved Waynesburg team to pick up a win today," said Head Coach
Mandee Craft. "But we battled well and came out stronger for it."
Geneva is back in action for its next PAC match next Wednesday at Washington & Jefferson starting at 6:30 p.m. Both the men's and women's tennis team will take part in an intra-squad mixed doubles tournament this Saturday for Homecoming starting at 11:00 a.m. on Jannuzi Courts.
